Maintenance and Repair Tips For Ice Makers

Although ice makers sometimes break down, the good news is that ice makers are quite straightforward appliances.

Below, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most common ice maker issues, as well as how you can try to fix the problem on your own.

If your unit has suddenly stopped making ice, the first thing to check is that the waterline is properly connected, doesn’t appear to be clogged up anywhere.  If you do notice a frozen waterline, feel free to use a hairdryer to help defrost it and return it to its normal functionality.

Alternatively, if your ice maker is working but simply isn’t producing an adequate amount of ice, a frozen water line is also the most likely culprit.

Even if your ice maker is producing enough ice, a leaking ice maker can be just as, if not more frustrating. Fortunately, there are several things that could cause your ice maker to leak, most of which, aren’t usually to complicated to resolve.

Some common causes include:

• An unlevel refrigerator
• A damaged waterline
• A loose waterline connection
• Faulty water valve
• Frozen waterline

Some ice makers may have a built-in water filter, which can occasionally become clogged.

If you suspect this issue, consult your refrigerator’s owner’s manual to determine where to locate the filter. Once located, inspect the filter to determine whether it is clogged with debris or not.

If possible, clean if possible, or replace as needed.

Aside from occasional repairs and clogs, there are a few other things that you can do to ensure your ice maker remains in tip-top shape at all times.

• Always follow the instructions in the owner’s manual. Each make and model may have its own unique set of maintenance procedures, so make sure to check your manual to learn more.
• Install a charcoal water filter on the water supply line to improve the quality of the water. A charcoal filter will improve the taste and minimize any scents/odors.
• Replace the water filter twice a year.
• Thoroughly clean the water reservoir every couple of months.
• Regularly clean your ice maker, but don’t forget to unplug the refrigerator and turn off the water supply first to prevent injury or messes.
• For cleaning, use warm water and vinegar instead of harsh cleaning products. Rinse it with plenty of clean water before resuming normal use.
• Keep an eye out for clogs. Be sure to stay on top of clogs to avoid a total breakdown of your ice maker in the future.
